Harrington Interactive Media, LLC (“HIM”), along with its publishing imprint, HIM Publications, and its publishing services brand, YouPublish, seeks to help the church become more beautiful through book publishing and content marketing. As a growing company, we are looking for a skilled graphic designer who can design beautiful book covers and interior layouts for our clients.
Position Overview
This is a contract position for book interior and cover design for both HIM Publications and YouPublish. The designer will be trained on typesetting with our in-house typesetting training.
Contract work will be hired out on a project basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Designing book covers that are beautiful and portray the proper message of the book.
- Designing book interior layouts that are both functional and cohesive with the book cover and branding.
- Applying revisions to books after they are proofread and edited.
- Preparing files for print according to the specifications.
- Designing eBooks for optimum output on e-readers.
- File management (keeping files organized and turning in all the necessary files at the end of the project).
- Creating marketing materials using the book branding files.
- Managing the workflow schedule (meeting deadlines at each milestone of the project).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must know the difference between the big three Adobe design programs (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and when to use each
- Must understand basic typography (font styles, leading, tracking, kerning) and show a portfolio that exhibits typographic excellence
- Understands print production and is able to set up files properly for print
- Must be willing to learn new processes that align with HIM workflow
- Must be able to work independently but take direction well
- Must have access to Adobe Creative Cloud (primarily InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat Pro, occasionally InCopy)
- Able to follow a schedule and meet deadlines
- Able to communicate and work with the project manager to complete tasks according to the schedule
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and G-Suite tools
- Willing to be trained in advanced typesetting with our in-house typesetting training
Nice to Have
- Typesetting experience either with books or other publications (magazine, music, posters, etc.)
- Knows how to set up paragraph and character styles
- Knowledge of basic grammar rules and how they integrate with design rules (i.e., widows, orphans and runts, rivers, ellipses, verse references, indents and spacing)
- Knowledge of advanced InDesign features such as Find/Change, GREP, Cross-References, Text Variables and Endnotes/Footnotes
- Knowledge in basic HTML or CSS (or an understanding of it in general)
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field
- 3+ years of graphic design or related experience (layout/typography is a plus)
- Can provide a portfolio of your work either by PDF or an online source
- Willing to be trained in advanced typesetting with our in-house typesetting training
Compensation
Payment is given on a per project basis.
